Palm Tree Trimming

When it comes to trimming palm trees, many will be surprised to learn that is in the best interest of the palm tree to leave the fronds on more often than not.

1. Fronds make the palm tree more storm tolerant; therefore, removing the fronds right before hurricane season can be counterproductive to the health of the tree.

2. Each time the fronds are cut, living tissue is revealed and the tree is open to potential sickness. Think if you sliced yourself every time you a tomato, your skin would never heal and your body would always be open to infection.

3. The palm fronds are the sole source of energy for the plant. This is where they make and and store energy.

4. As the color fades from green to yellow to brown, stored carbohydrates and energy is being released into the tree. When the frond is finally brown, all nutrients have been depleted from the frond. Removing them before they turn brown can reduce the nutrients supplied to the tree, creating further health and malnutrition for the palm tree.

5. Cutting off too many fronds reduces the photosynthesis process for palm trees

Always make sure that when you trim the fronds of palm trees, the fronds are 100% brown to ensure the health of the palm tree.

For a good example of what these trees should look like, take a visit to Mary Ola Reynolds Miller Palm Preserve in Downtown Panama City. With over 70 native palms, they trim the fronds only when they find there to be an excess of brown fronds among the palm trees.
