Community Food Forests.

Working together to make Bay County beautiful, sustainable, and healthy.

Our vision is community gardens that sustain themselves. Or mostly.

Many may ask, “Is that even a possible goal?”

When we think of nature, we come to realize and appreciate the fact that humans do not have to intervene in the overall maintenance as each species has their part in keeping things in balance. When we grow a community food forest to resemble that of nature, we help to minimize the work that is needed by humans as we allow other wildlife species to do the jobs they are meant for.

Our community food forests will be built with native perennial plants that will continue to sustain us and the surrounding wildlife - persimmons, blackberries, blueberries, oak trees (think acorns people!) red mulberry, and so many more. We will supplement these sites with native flowers and small trees that will help ensure continued food for pollinators along with other native and non-native herbs and vegetables (mostly perennial of course).

Our goal of having a 75% perennial community food forest helps to mitigate the amount of continued volunteer help that will be needed on a daily basis, ensures that food is almost always available for the community, and the soil can become as healthy as possible due to minimum human intervention. We will allow room for the growth of annuals as not all food production will be provided by plants that remain constant.

Our vision of community food forests will be open to anyone who passes through, whether you help to manage the garden or not. We hope that with time, as our gardens grow, they bring not just food but also inspiration to those who visit.

Join us today in creating food for all in Bay County and making our dream of community food forests come alive by sponsoring a garden! If you have a space that would be a good fit, fill out the application below to see how we can make this space come alive for the Bay County community.
